The ICU Grandpa

The ICU Grandpa

With the preemie cradled in his arms, the retired marketing executive glanced toward the entrance of the pediatric intensive care unit.

The child’s mother stood at the door, David Deutchman later recalled. She’d gone home to take care of her older daughter, all the while worrying about the baby boy whom she’d left the previous night at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta hospital.

Now she was back.

“Who are you?” the mother asked, peering at this stranger holding her swaddled son, life-sustaining wires taped to his little cheek.

Well I’m the ICU grandpa,” Deutchman replied.

He could have been my grandson.

When I first discovered the story of David Deutchman – aka The ICU Grandpa or Baby Whisperer – it all seemed so close to home. Not long ago one of my grandchildren was born prematurely after just 27 weeks. He was tiny, but strong. When my daughter was released from the hospital, our little guy stayed behind in the Intensive Care Unit to grow and develop. How wonderful it would have been to know that while my daughter was away, our precious grandson was being cuddled, sang to, and loved.

Each time I watch the video or read the story, David Deutchman inspires me to do a little more to make a difference – to be a better grandpa. Deutchman is impacting lives and families in a way that every child deserves and The Grandpa Project admires.

Thank you David!
